Veggie Patch Update

I wanted to post (perhaps brag like a proud parent too) on the latest development of the veggie garden. The plants are looking great overall.  I have some amazing Zucchini coming through - I can't recommend this wonderful vegetable enough.  They are a high producing plant, with vegetables that store well and have a wide variety of uses, such as simple stir fry's, grilled on a BBQ, or grated together with cheese, add some flour and egg to make a wonderful Zucchini slice.  The trick is to know when the right time is to pick them.  When they are around the thickness of your thumb, you can start to consider harvest; the photo below is around the right time.  At this stage I would usually use them in a stir fry as they are so tender and full of flavor.

You need to keep an eye on these beauties as they grow very fast.  Once it takes my full hand to wrap around a zucchini's middle, I pick them regardless of how I intend to use them.  After this stage they get too big and become 'stringy' in texture as they go to seed.

I also have some strong tomatoes coming along.  The Amish tomatoes are once again out performing the other varieties.  I hope to be eating tomato and sweet basil salad in a few weeks time.

The pumpkins are spreading out over the grass nicely and the small pumpkins are swelling in the summer sun.  I have to make sure that I supply them with plenty of water as they are particularly water hungry plants.

So far so good.  Fingers crossed they continue to develop, otherwise my food stocks will not be a pretty site.
