Thanks To The Amish Tomato
I sorted through my vegetable seeds today and came across my carefully sealed packet of Amish Tomato seeds. If I could only plant one tomato, this would be it. Thick and fleshy, I have found this Amish tomato (Brandywine variety) to be very versatile. I have used them fresh in salads, straight into the pan to make bolognese, or even bottling pasta sauce for winter use. A few years ago, my mum gave me a packet of these tomato seeds to try. The packet claimed they could grow up to 1 Kilogram in weight!!! Doubtful as it seemed, I planted them and waited expectantly.
The first thing I noticed as the plant matured was the large broad flat leaves, very much the same as potatoes have. As all the different varieties of tomatoes in my vegetable patch continued to grow and flower that year, I could clearly see that this Amish variety had flowers up to three times as large as the others.
And then the tomatoes came. They grew, and grew, and grew until they were larger than both my fists put together. After years of gardening, I still find it an absolute miracle that nature can create so much food from such a small seed. It truly is one of the amazing miracles of life.
So did I reach the 1 kilogram tomato? The below tomato last year weighed in at 1.01 Kg and made enough pasta sauce to feed four people.
