Sweet Sunflowers

Well into autumn now and the summer vegetable garden is coming to an end.One of the last sources of food was the wonderful sunflowers.

Here is a photo of the flowers at their sunny best.

Here is what they look like now at harvest time.

So now that the petals are gone, the wonderful sunflower seeds still remain.

It's quite easy to harvest the seeds. I like to start at the edges with my thumb and "rub" the seeds loose as I work my way to the centre.

Sunflowers are a wonderful plant. They are easy to grow, are quite hardy and are a great source of protein and minerals.

There is something wonderful about eating oven roasted sunflower seeds in winter, with a nice cup of tea and the roaring wood fire to keep you toasty warm.
