Veggie Beds

Today I installed my vegetable beds. Each box is made from three red gum sleepers.  One is cut in half for the two top ends and then two full length pieces make up the sides.  I then used screws with brackets to hold them together.  Not only do they look great, but they are also highly portable, allowing me to bring them from my old place to the farm after only a few hours work.

Although many people use treated pine for this sort of thing - I for one refuse to use it in this application.  I am not a scientific person, and the reports I have read claim it is safe, yet I won't risk it.  Putting chemicals (that includes arsenic) that close to my food source, when there are more natural and safer options available, just doesn't make sense to me.

Now all I need is organically enriched soil for these beds and I can start spring sowing.
