Water Lilies
I have been wanting to add more diversity to my main dam for some time now and when a bargain opportunity presented itself, I became the proud owner of three pots full of water lilies.
The colours available were white, yellow and red ... I got one of each.
As these plants begin to grow around the perimeter of the dam, it will shade and cool the water, attract birds and also insects what will provide food for the fish growing in there. It will also provide a place to hide for additional fingerlings I may introduce at a later date from predators.
The advice I was given to plant these little beauties was to ensure they were at least 20 mm beneath the water, and not to dig a hole (as I had intended), but instead use rocks to weigh down the root ball. In a few weeks the roots will grow down into the soil and in turn anchor the whole plant.
After a quick drive around the farm, I found three rocks to use in the planting - l love making use of things that are just laying around the paddock. Makes me feel very wealthy!
Although I got my feet stuck in the mud and almost fell into the water ... it was a rather simple exercise. Above is a photo of the finished result - I'm pretty happy with it and can't wait to see these beautiful plants multiply and add the much needed diversity to the farm.
