Fruit Tree Transplant

What a busy day! Today was all about fruit tree planting ... or rather, fruit tree transplanting.  During my years of procrastination, I planted fruit trees in 'temporary' places around my old house.  A peach tree in the back corner, an apple tree beside the veggie patch, even an olive tree in a pot.  Today after years of imagining it, I planted my little orchard.

Early spring is late to be planting fruit trees, and I winced and gritted my teeth as I cut through taproots hoping that I had not just destroyed the tree.  Perhaps I should have left them behind, but something inside me just couldn't do it.  You see, when I look at my fruit trees, especially ones that have been in the ground for three to five years, I see Time.  Time I've invested to see an annual harvest of food in the future.  Time I do not want to simply give away.  Time that I simply can't put a price tag on.  It takes most fruit trees five plus years to really become productive, and after hanging onto them for so long, I just couldn't leave them.

So, to tally the trees thus far, I have:

7 Apple trees, 5 Olive trees, 3 Cherry trees, 1 Peach tree, 1 apricot tree, 2 lemon trees, 1 grapefruit tree, 1 lime tree and 2 orange trees.

Needless to say my hands and feet are killing me, but its been worth it and I can't wipe the smile from my face at seeing these mature trees line the fence around my future house site.

The ability to establish a food source as quickly as possible is a priority if I'm going to be successful in my adventure, so fingers crossed these trees can survive the late move.

Next on the list ... vegetable patch.
