Forest Pork - New Product Launch
Life On The Land would like to announce the launch of a new product for our customers - Forrest Pork!
Our pigs have been a wonderful resource in regenerating the forested areas of our farm. Without the need for chemical sprays we have been able to remove and reduce weeds such as blackberry and serrated tussocks - in fact, the pigs love it and actively seek them out to build their nests.
We have harvested our pigs and the taste and quality of food from an animal that has been able to live a life where it can express its natural behaviours is simply amazing.
So why the name Forest Pork? We knew pigs were naturally forest animals, but it is one thing to read about it, or surf the internet or watch YouTube videos about this fact, but it is another thing entirely to raise them in this environment and observe first hand how they behave. Everything they need to build their nests are available in the forest; branches, tussocks and even rocks. They have material to build their homes, the trees provide shade from the heat, and cover when it rains. Our first litter of piglets were born in the middle of a hard frost and we didn't lose a single one from the cold because of the overhead canopy. The forest also provides additional food be it tree bark, fungi, grass, weeds, etc. When we stopped to think about it, there really wasn't anything else we could name this product other than Forrest Pork.
Our pigs will be heritage breed pigs, mainly Berkshire and some Large Black pigs at this stage. They really are bred for the outdoor life and thrive in forrest conditions.
The interest around our Forest Pork has steadily grown over the many months and we are now pleased to be able to share this with our wonderful customers.
